OVERVIEW
The Annals is the official medical journal of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. It is a refereed monthly journal appearing in the Index Medicus and has been accepted in the Science Citation Index-Expanded, ISI Alerting Services, and Current Contents/Clinical Medicine.
It serves the various specialties that form the membership of the Academy and orientates its publications to these disciplines.
MY ROLE
Project Manager & UI/UX Designer
The Annals website is currently in the midst of undergoing data migration and development.
The Challenge
The Academy of Singapore (AMS) was looking to redesign the Annals website that was built over 20 years ago and engaged me as a project manager to digitally transform the design, user experience and user interface of its journal.
The ANNALS is home to over 3,000 research papers and findings from the medical community and they wanted to provide their readers and users with an all new 21st-century digital experience.
My Contribution
Project Management
I was assigned as the Project Manager for this task. I worked closely with cross-functional teams to develop scope, deliverables as well as budgeting and timelines for the website migration. I also ensured that business goals and milestones were met according to timelines.
My responsibilities included proposing designs and wireframes for the new website, overseeing the database migration and integration with the existing membership management system, documentation, resource management as well as user acceptance testing and training.
I also reviewed and proposed ways to improve business processes and workflows within the team.
UI/UX Design
For the new website, I wanted to go for a rather minimalistic feel. This meant focusing on a simple colour palette as well as removing any “clutter” from the website itself. This would allow users to concentrate on the main proposition the Annals is providing, which is the journal itself.
Below are some mockups of the new Annals homepage I worked on.
Market Research
This project involved a great deal of market research as well. This is how users will view your business and identify gaps in expectations. Having good market intelligence helps to minimise risks when making key business decisions.
Research was carried out to analyse what our direct competitors were doing in terms of the type of content they were putting out and how their journals were structured.
I also had to research on Advertising Rates across the different medical journals in the world to ensure we were complying with the relevant regulations and rates.
